Gender equality and the status of women in society were on the agenda when the CEBC hosted the Honorable Jean Augustine at a large dinner, held on 12 th January at the Canadian Embassy. The event was attended by several prominent ladies in Egyptian society.
As Canadian Minister of State for Multiculturalism and the Status of Women, Ms Jean Augustine has devoted much of her career to championing the cause of gender equality. She told members about the role played by Status of Women Canada (SWC) the federal government department, which, under her leadership, promotes gender equality and the full participation of women in the economic, social, cultural and political life of the country.
Gender equality is very much at the heart of the Egyptian social and policy agenda. It has played a key role in shaping modern Egyptian consciousness throughout the past century. Sharing Canadian society's experiences of the realities and struggles of gender issues, the Minister was able to offer valuable insight and practical guidance on the subject to her audience.
